Issues that Matter to Our Community

Housing Affordability

Housing Affordability in Irvine’s District 5

Proposed Solutions:
  1. Workforce Housing Partnerships
Collaborate with developers to prioritize affordable rental units for essential workers like teachers, nurses, and first responders in new mixed-use developments.

  2. First-Time Homebuyer Assistance
Expand programs offering low-interest loans and grants to essential workers purchasing homes, fostering long-term community investment.

  3. Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)
Simplify permits and incentivize homeowners to build and rent ADUs at affordable rates for seniors and essential workers.

  4. Tax Portability for Seniors
Support policies allowing seniors to transfer their property tax base when downsizing, removing barriers to affordability.

  5. Student Housing Support
Partner with universities to create affordable student housing options, including subsidized units and intergenerational programs connecting students with older adults renting unused rooms.

  6. Affordable Rental Unit Expansion
Work with developers to convert market-rate rentals into affordable housing and advocate for inclusionary zoning to increase the availability of affordable units citywide.

These strategies leverage California’s affordable housing policies and local resources to meet the unique needs of Irvine residents, ensuring a stable, diverse, and vibrant community.

Parks & Libraries

Proposed Renovations for Parks:
  1. Interactive Play Spaces: Introduce sensory gardens, splash pads, and STEM-focused playgrounds to encourage learning and fun for children of all abilities.

  2. Fitness and Wellness Zones: Add outdoor exercise equipment, walking trails, and yoga platforms to promote physical activity.

  3. Sustainability Enhancements: Implement solar lighting, water-efficient landscaping, and recycling stations to reduce environmental impact.

  4. Tech-Enhanced Areas: Include Wi-Fi-enabled seating zones for remote work or study and app-integrated park features for navigation and event updates.

  5. Community Gardens: Allocate spaces for urban gardening to connect residents to nature and provide opportunities for local food production.

Proposed Renovations for Libraries:
  1. Makerspaces: Equip libraries with 3D printers, sewing machines, and tech tools to inspire innovation and skill-building.

  2. Study Pods and Collaborative Areas: Design flexible spaces with soundproof pods for focused work and open areas for group projects.

  3. Digital Hubs: Update technology to include e-learning zones, virtual reality stations, and rentable devices like tablets and laptops.

  4. Cultural Programming Spaces: Create rooms for workshops, lectures, and cultural showcases reflecting Irvine’s diversity.

  5. Extended Outdoor Areas: Build covered outdoor reading patios to provide alternative spaces for study and relaxation.

Why This Matters:
  • Community Engagement: Parks and libraries act as hubs where residents connect, learn, and grow. Renovations encourage greater use and accessibility.

  • Health and Education: Enhanced facilities promote mental well-being, physical health, and lifelong learning.

  • City Image: Modern, functional public spaces boost Irvine’s reputation as a forward-thinking and inclusive city.

  • Environmental Responsibility: Sustainable updates to parks and libraries align with Irvine’s environmental goals, setting an example for green living.

These upgrades can create a thriving community that values health, education, and connection.

Sustainable

Irvine’s well-planned infrastructure offers incredible potential to address traffic congestion through smarter mobility solutions. My approach includes:

  • School-Dedicated Buses: Reduce peak-hour traffic by providing safe, efficient transport for students.

  • Bike-Friendly City: Enhance bike lane safety with improved signage and barriers, introduce bike rentals in parks, and enforce regulations on e-bike usage.

  • Promoting Walkability: Create campaigns to encourage walking through shaded paths and pedestrian-friendly routes.

  • Mobility Diversity: Expand shared micro-mobility options like scooters and bikes to connect communities and open spaces.

These efforts will ease congestion, support sustainability, and make Irvine a model of urban mobility.
